How a license plate lookup works
Every U.S. license plate is tied to a vehicle registration record that includes the VIN. When you enter a plate number and state, AutoVinScope looks up the associated VIN and then runs the same full history check as if you had entered the VIN directly. This is especially useful when you're looking at a car in a parking lot or at a dealership and the VIN isn't easily visible.
What you get from a license plate lookup
A license plate lookup returns the same information as a VIN-based report:
- Vehicle identification — year, make, model, trim, and factory specifications
- Title and ownership history — title brands, number of owners, and location history
- Accident and damage records — reported crashes and damage events
- Odometer history — mileage readings over time

When to use a license plate lookup instead of a VIN
A license plate lookup is the best option when the VIN is hard to find or when you're reviewing a car before a test drive. The plate is right on the back of the vehicle. Just note the plate number, check which state issued it (shown on the plate itself), and enter both into the search bar.
What a license plate lookup cannot do
AutoVinScope is a vehicle history research tool, not a people-search service. A license plate lookup returns information about the vehicle, not the registered owner. Personal information such as the owner's name, address, or contact details is not included in any report. This is consistent with U.S. privacy laws governing motor vehicle records under the Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA).
