How to check EV battery health before buying
On a used electric car the battery is the single most expensive component, and its condition is not visible from the outside. Here is how to measure real capacity, read the warranty position and use the VIN record before you commit.
Why battery health decides the price of a used EV
Two identical electric cars with the same mileage can be worth thousands of dollars apart purely because of pack condition. Replacement packs are one of the most expensive repairs in the used market, and a car that has lost a fifth of its usable capacity has effectively lost a fifth of its usefulness — shorter trips, more charging stops, worse winter range. Battery condition is therefore the first thing to establish, before paint, tyres or interior.
1. Read the state of health, not just the range estimate
State of health (SoH) is the pack's current usable capacity as a percentage of its original capacity. The dashboard range figure is a prediction based on recent driving, so it moves with weather, tyres and driving style. Plug an OBD-II adapter into the car and use a brand-specific app to read the raw pack capacity in kilowatt-hours, then divide by the original figure for that trim. Ask the seller to let you do this during the inspection — a refusal is itself an answer.
2. Run a controlled range comparison
Charge the car to 100 percent, note the indicated range, then drive a fixed loop at steady speed with climate control off and compare the miles used against the miles of range consumed. A healthy pack tracks close to one-to-one on a mild day. Big divergence points to degradation or a weak cell group.
3. Confirm the warranty position from the in-service date
Federal rules require at least 8 years or 100,000 miles of battery coverage on EVs sold in the United States, and several states extend that further. The countdown starts on the in-service date recorded against the VIN, which can be a year earlier than the model year suggests. Establish that date, subtract it from today, and you know exactly how much coverage a second owner still gets.
4. Ask about charging habits
- Was the car charged mainly at home on AC, or on public DC fast chargers?
- Was it habitually charged to 100 percent and left sitting at full?
- Did it spend its life in a hot climate without a garage?
- Was it used for rideshare, delivery or rental duty?
Each of these accelerates degradation. A car with a gentle charging life will hold capacity far better than one that lived on 150 kW chargers in Phoenix summers.
5. Check high-voltage recalls and software campaigns
Several manufacturers have issued battery recalls that either replace modules or cap the usable charge through software. A capped pack behaves like a degraded pack. Check open and completed recalls against the VIN and ask for the dealer paperwork showing which remedy was applied.
6. Rule out water and collision damage
A high-voltage pack sits low in the floor, so flood exposure and underbody collision damage are more consequential on an EV than on a combustion car. Corrosion around the pack seals or a repaired floor pan is a walk-away signal. Title brands and damage records tied to the VIN are the fastest way to spot this before you ever look at the car.
